Schools out for summer! The question is “What to do?” There is a great place in downtown Atlanta that you can visit to escape the Georgia heat and learn a thing or two. Right now the Georgia Aquarium is hosting a very cool traveling exhibit called Washed Ashore. Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea features 13 sculptures of animal life constructed entirely from marine debris. The larger-than-life pieces will be on display throughout Georgia Aquarium through September 25, 2016 and are included in general admission. Each piece includes educational facts about the art and tips on how to help reduce the marine debris that is threatening the health of our oceans.
To celebrate and bring awareness to this problem, my family decided to take on a challenge and create a treasure from our garbage. Using a plastic coffee can, Popsicle sticks, and an old funnel, we constructed our very own fairy house.
Why a DIY fairy house? I am a big scifi nerd, and my go to genre for books and movies is anything that has to do with magical worlds. After all, one of my favorite authors is C.S. Lewis. So, when I was given the opportunity to help spread the news about protecting our oceans and the task of creating something out of trash, I knew my chance had finally come! Now I could finally make that fairy house for a reason! Of course, I could have made it all along, but doing something to help with a cause you believe in makes even more sweeter!
Scientists project that by the year 2050 our oceans will contain more pieces of plastic than fish! I do not know about you, but that is heartbreaking!
We want to help support our oceans anyway we can especially if it means I get to make more fairy houses and accessories! Actually, my fmaily has made a promise to look for ways we can recycle items in our everyday trash. We want to help! If everyone pitches in and does their part, we can save our oceans and all those that call it home!
Now it’s your turn to show us how your family can transform trash into treasure! We will select one winner to win a family four pack of general admission tickets to the Georgia Aquarium where you can check out the Washed Ashore traveling exhibit.
Winner will be selected by email July 7.
