The 3rd Annual Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama concluded this afternoon at Atlanta Motor Speedway under warm and sunny springtime skies.
In just its third edition, the Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama, the massive celebration of anything with an engine, has grown into one of the largest festivals of its kind in the South. From hot rods to rat rods to motorcycles, to monster trucks, there is something for everybody – and then some – at the annual two-day event.
The 2016 show was bigger and better than each of its first two editions, as attendees were treated to more than 1,000 classic and collector cars, hundreds of vendors, the Pull-A-Part Swap Meet, Autocross competitions, Hot Rodders of Tomorrow qualifying events, and much more.
There were more than 200 awards handed out from Classic Chevy, to Cool Custom and from Street Scraper to Vintage Trailer. In addition, nearly $20,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to show participants.
In the second day of regional national finals qualifying for the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow, Peach County High School repeated as the show’s fastest to strip down and then rebuild an engine, posting a top time of just 18 minutes and five seconds. Forsyth Central High School finished just two minutes behind Peach County for the second-place time, and East Ridge High School rounded out the top-three podium finishes.
In all, seven teams qualified for the dual national finals in Las Vegas and Indianapolis this fall.
Closing out the show, the father of drag racing, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, who served as the show’s official grand marshal, piloted the pace car in the participants’ Speedway Cruise around the 1.54-mile oval. Garlits met fans and signed autographs throughout both days of the show and showed off one of his famous “Swamp Rat” rail cars.
Dates for the 4th Annual Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama, Georgia’s premier motoring festival, are set for April 22-23, 2017.
