Family Life’s Passport2Purity Getaway Kit Third Edition Review

Your child begins the journey into adolescence in a world of sexting, bullying, online stalking and moral defiance.  Innocence is under attack, and you cannot win the battle with a single awkward talk or a strict set of rules.  The primary defense for your child is a strong relationship with you and with God.  FamilyLife developed Passport2Purity (P2P) to assist you in building heart-to-heart communication with your preteen while laying a foundation of purity that will prepare him or her for the turbulent years ahead.  Through the shared listening experience, object lessons and guided conversations of a P2P weekend getaway, you can set your son or daughter on a journey of moral integrity – and strengthen the bond between you.  It is designed to be used by a mother and daughter or a father and son when the child is a preteen.  It is suggested that the materials be completed over a weekend away from home, as the child may be more open to discussing the topics away from his or her normal environment.  If this isn’t possible, the material can be completed over a period of four or five weeks.
About the getaway kit:

The third edition of Passport2Purity (P2P Version 3) features new design, copy revisions, the addition of 25 student devotionals, and an accompanying project kit (sold separately). P2P is designed to help parents discuss love, sex, and relationships with their preteen children. The Passport2Purity kit includes a parent guide (Tour Guide), a student guide (Travel Journal), and five audio sessions on CD with special projects.

Session One: Beginning the Journey

Challenges, Traps, and Choices

This session lays the groundwork for the weekend. Discusses challenges adolescents may encounter and choices they will have to make.

Session Two: Running with the Herd

Friendships and Peer Pressure

Session two leads the child on an evaluation of their friendships and an evaluation of themselves as a friend. It asks them to consider the influence their peers are having on them and the influence they are having on their peers.

Session Three: Ready for an Upgrade?

Changes in Him, Changes in Her

Session three discusses the physical changes that are going to occur in the child’s life. It encourages him or her to treat the opposite sex with respect. Separate sections are addressed to the young men and young women. It also explains the act of sex and how it is a gift from God to be saved for marriage.

Session Four: Destination: Lé Pure

Setting Boundaries
Session four talks about setting boundaries both physically and emotionally and deciding beforehand how far you will go. Encourages parents to set boundaries on the front end with their child and discusses the consequences of not having boundaries.

Session Five: Crossing the Date Line

Seeing Dating Differently

Session five is a summation of the weekend. Parent and child hopefully will reach an agreement about when a child will date and what that will look like.

My Review
I had the opportunity to use this with one of my sons and I can honestly say that it was very beneficial.  Children growing up in today’s world face many challenges that we never faced as children.  It is truly a different world than the one I grew up in.  Being able to openly discuss with my child what challenges they are likely to face growing up helps me to to influence them in the right way instead of allowing worldly influences.  The material is honest, clear, and tastefully done.  Each session included teaching, stories and testimonies.    In addition, each topic for each session is reinforced using a hands-on visual project.  You end the journey with a weekend getaway.  This provides you with an opportunity for “invaluable, concentrated time of memories and conversations and can result in relational equity and closeness that can last a lifetime.”
Passport to Purity is an excellent investment in the future of your child.  I wholeheartedly recommend this resource for anyone with children approaching adolescence.

Gattitown Corpus Christi

Guest Reviewer:  Erika Litteral

Having grown up in Georgia, we had a few local pizza places that were our favorites.  The owners knew us so well that they would make our pizzas the minute we walked through the doors.  My family now lives in right outside Corpus Christi and I am thrilled to have found a new local favorite that my family can visit.  It certainly reminds me of home.

My family had the opportunity to check out Corpus Christi’s Gattitown recently.  With great food and fun games all under one roof, our family had some fun creating memories and enjoying delicious pizza!

With an unlimited buffet filled with pizzas, pastas, a full salad bar, desserts and more fill the buffet, you are sure to find something you like here!  There was so much delicious food! Plus, there’s plenty of space to eat with the family in multiple themed dining rooms.

After our bellies were FULL, it was off to the game room for an afternoon of fun!  By the way, the game room was HUGE! From video/arcade games to skee ball, there is so much to choose from!

We had an absolute blast here and encourage you to check it out too!  The managers are really nice and will go out of their way to make sure that you are satisfied.  They even made some of our favorites from back home.

Old Fashioned Movie, Novel, and Devotional Review Giveaway

As Christians we should strive to put God first in all of our relationships but we seldom know just how to do that.  They find themselves asking a question that many do.  What does it look like to put God first in my relationships?  Is it possible to have an “old-fashioned” and God-honoring courtship in contemporary America?  Some of you may be saying, “Yeah, it sounds so simple but you aren’t living the life I am living!  You do not carry the baggage that I’m carrying!”  You’re right, I am not.  I am living out the life that Christ has planned for me and my story has its own share of baggage.
The film Old Fashioned reveals beautifully dating that is love centered rather than lust centered.  It focuses on love with respect and honesty while keeping it Christ centered.  The film also depicts the realness of the struggles in life.  As a mother of teenage boys it made me realize just how I would like for them to approach the relationships with women.
OLD FASHIONED is a romantic comedy that centers on Clay Walsh, a former frat boy.  Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, Clay Walsh has settled down to turn an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town.  He has become notorious for his lofty and outdated theories on love and romance as well as for his devout belief in God.  When Amber Hewson, a free-spirited young woman with a restless soul, drifts into the area and rents the apartment above his shop, she finds herself surprisingly drawn to his strong faith and noble ideas, which are new and intriguing to her. And Clay, though he tries to fight and deny it, simply cannot resist being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life.  They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an “old fashioned” courtship?   Ultimately, Clay must step out from behind his relational theories and Amber must overcome her own fears and deep wounds as the two of them, together, attempt the impossible: an “old-fashioned” and God-honoring courtship in contemporary America.

This is one of the films that I recommend parents of children 13 and older see as it is rated PG13.  I really believe that it will help shed some light on what dating really should like.  Purchase the DVD here.

Old Fashioned doesn’t just stop at a DVD.    There is also a novel and devotional available to help you navigate through dating the “old fashioned” way.  I recently finished reviewing these.

About the Novel

Turning his back on his reckless lifestyle, former frat boy Clay Walsh has settled down to turn an antique shop in a small Midwestern college town….and to purse lofty and outdated theories on love and romance.  But when Amber Hewson, a free-spirited woman with a gypsy soul, rents the apartment above his shop, Clay can’t help being attracted to her spontaneous and passionate embrace of life.  Amber also finds herself surprisingly drawn to Clay, but his ideas about relationships are unusual to say the least, and they bring to light her own deep wounds and fears about love.  They say opposites attract, but can Clay and Amber move beyond their differences and their pasts to attempt an “old fashioned” courtship?

My Thoughts the Novel

What I liked about the novel is that it truly follows the movie well.  It provides the reader with more insight on the thoughts and actions of the characters.  It also provided discussion questions that you could possibly use in a book club setting.

About the Devotional

Contrary to popular opinion, being “old fashioned” doesn’t mean you’re dull or unromantic.  In fact, a true old fashioned relationship can be more exciting and romantic than anything you’ve ever experienced!  So what does it mean to do things the old fashioned way?  Sure, it means opening doors, holding out chairs, and taking things slow.  But a true old fashioned romance goes much, much deeper than that.  Inspired by the motion picture Old Fashioned, this book will show you how to reclaim the lost art of romance by introducing you to romantic love as God intended it.  Regardless of your past mistakes, where you’ve been, what you’ve done, or where you are now, you can find and create a love that will last a lifetime!  As you work your way through this forty-day journey of inspiring readings and questions for reflection, you’ll discover all the unique and amazing benefits of doing things the old fashioned way.  And before you know it, you’ll be well on your way to creating a love story for the ages.

My Thoughts  on The Old Fashioned Way: Reclaiming the Lost Art of Romance

Geared mainly for Christian singles, this devotional shows the reader what a Christ centered relationship should look like.  It With over 40 devotionals, you will begin to see what makes relationships healthy.  A big part of this devotional includes journaling your thoughts and feelings.

Now, on to the giveaway!   I will be offering a great prize pack for someone, the DVD and the books!  Gotta a son or daughter that is about to enter the dating game or one that is in the midst of of it, then you WILL NOT want to miss giveaway.

Homemade Banana Pudding

My father loves banana pudding.  He always has and for years I have always made him his second best for dessert, brownies!  This year I decided to change it up a bit and try my hand at making some banana pudding.

Well, if you know me well you know that I am not in the kitchen that often.  So I had to do a little research to come up with the best recipe.  There are many of them out there that looked really good.  I wanted to attempt to make the Paula Dean version but it looked a little too involved.  So my compromise was to take a little of this and a little of that and tweak it to fit what I thought would be great.

This recipe will feed up to 8 people; however, see my After Thoughts below.

15 - 31

Homemade Banana Pudding

2    3.4 oz boxes of French Vanilla Instant Pudding

3 cups of cold milk

1 box of Vanilla Wafers

1     8 oz tub of Cool Whip Whipped Topping, thawed

6 bananas

Beat pudding mixes and milk with a whisk for 2 minutes.

Let it stand for 5 minutes.  While you wait go ahead and cut your bananas into slices.  I did a mixture of thin and thick slices.

15 - 24

Get the dish you wish to put the pudding in.

Layer the bottom of dish with Vanilla Wafers.  Be sure to turn them where the top of the wafer is touching the bottom of the dish.

Then make a layer of banana slices.

Follow that with a layer of pudding.

Then do another layering of each.

I chose to follow this with a layer of whipped topping.

Then continue with the original layering pattern of Vanilla Wafers, banana slices, and French Vanilla pudding.  Repeat.

Top it off with the remaining whipped topping.

Add a few Vanilla Wafers and banana slices to the top.

Take the remaining Vanilla Wafers and crush them.  Spread those over the whipped topping.

15 - 4

Cover and refrigerate until it is time to enjoy.  I did read that you can dip the bananas that you wish to use on the top in lemon juice to help them not to darken.

After thoughts:

If I had this to do over again I would probably double the pudding to add in.  Since I was trying to go for the layered look of the pudding I could not be as generous as I would have liked to with the pudding.

15 - 2

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this recipe!  I am planning to venture more into the abyss known as the kitchen and cook up some more recipes.

Inside Out Movie Review

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out.

Today we saw the movie Inside Out and we were fell in love!  This is a MUST SEE movie.  Everyone in your family will enjoy this movie!  What I loved most about this film is that it is a completely new idea and it was so revealing.  Showing us firsthand how our emotions play a part in our overall well being.  Although we would all like to remain happy all the time and filled with joy, we have to experience all the emotions in order to better understand ourselves and others.  I just feel in love with this movie and would love to see it again!  It had us crying and laughing!

Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else.

When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind—taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.”

Be sure to get there early to see the short LAVA!  It is precious!

Guinness World Records Gatlinburg

What kid does not enjoy thumbing through the pages of a Guinness Book of World Records.  As a teacher I know that this book is one of the hottest selling items when book fair rolls around!

The amazing book has come to life through incredible displays, interactive games, trivia, themed galleries and video! Enjoy hundreds of unbelievable exhibits of Guinness World Records from amazing groups of sports, space, animals, food, human achievement and more.  Featured memorabilia of famous record holders like Elvis, The Beatles, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, and Much More!  There is something fun for every person in your group!

From the outside where many people stop to get this photo op to the last exhibit, we had a BLAST!  We read about people we did not even know existed.  We discovered records of things that we would have never thought someone would be crazy enough to do!

We loved the interactive exhibits found throughout the museum.  One of the boys favorite and the one they could not wait to get to was the strength test.  Check out their fun below.

One of my favorite parts was at the very end when I got the chance to work my magic on Ms. PacMan!  You know back in the day I was known to throw down on that game and here was my chance to show my boys what this momma could do!  Apparently the world record for clearing a level in Ms. PacMan is 35 seconds.  To be honest, that is pretty fast!  I got close–42 seconds!  Yes, I continued to play this over and over so all the high scores were mine for that day.  Even the boys could not beat momma!

We enjoyed our time at the Guinness World Records in Gatlinburg.  It really did amaze and astound us!  The only issue I would have and not that it is really a complaint but I am sure it is hard to keep it updated with new records and such being broken.  As a museum you have to expect when you go there that is is not feasible to update it daily.  If you want to know the latest records, check out some of the social media connections for Guinness World Records below.

My conclusion, go!  Take the kids and go.  You will enjoy it.
