Groovy Lab in a Box

Subscription boxes are becoming increasingly popular these days and you can find nearly any kind of subscription box you can think of.  From children themed boxes to adult themed, subscription boxes provide consumers with a fun filled experience.

You might be asking yourself…What is a subscription box?  Subscription Boxes are boxes that contain an variety of products all centered around a certain theme like beauty, pets, food, science, etc…  The cool thing about subscription boxes is that they allow you to try out different products that you may not have even heard of before or sample ones that you love.  But not all boxes are like this.  Some boxes provide an educational experience for their users.

Groovy Lab in a Box is the brainchild of scientists, parents, educators, and business owners who have worked in the private sector of the science community.

It was created to encourage children to channel their inner STEMist. Their purpose is to provide children with an opportunity to focus his or her imagination, determination, and innately inquisitive nature with a way to complete a monthly STEM project using the Engineering Design Process.

By utilizing the Engineering Design Process, students are held to a variety of standards for their finished product. Most importantly, they are provided the opportunity to engage their imaginations and apply critical thinking to supply their own desired outcome.

With Groovy Lab in a Box, you will receive boxes full of everything you need to learn about and do hands on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) experiments for ages 8+.

As an educator, keeping my kids engaged throughout the summer in learning is important.   It is even more important that we problem solve, think critical, and just take time to investigate the world around us.  So I was thrilled we received our special box in the mail.

Our theme is Fly With Me.  We will be investigating:

Bernoulli’s Principle

Force of Air

Wings are Lifters

Catapult Airplane

Helicopter with Propeller

I can’t wait to report back to you on all the fun we had!  Be looking for that soon.

If you want to get your child started on these boxes, which I strongly urge you to do, check out the different packages they offer.

Groovy Lab in a Box offers several different levels of subscriptions:

$26.95 / Month – Billed monthly
$25.95 / Month – Billed every 3 months

Hello Keurig!  Are you worth it?

I have been holding out on getting a Keurig for quite sometime now and finally broke down to get one.  I have been using the Keurig 2.0 for a little over two months and I am happy with it!

My Thoughts

The Keurig 2.0 is supposed to only use licensed Keurig K-cups.

Actually, this is not true.  There are companies that are supplying users with tips and tricks to allow you to use a variety of cups in the Keurig 2.0 or older models.  My parents actually got the “freedom clip” from Rogers Family Company.  This clip is easily installed and stays in place so you can use ANY cup you want in your Keurig.

Rogers Mountain Company has also just released the also Freedom Cup.  This revolutionary item allows you to just brew your favorite coffee.  No plastic cups needed!

Brewooze has also created a reusable plastic cups for coffee lovers to use in their Keurig machines.  The best part about these are that they are SAFE for the environment unlike the KCups.

We actually got a chance to review these and really feel in love with them!

Other things I like about the Keurig 2.0:

I really like that I can select whether to brew a 4 oz., 6 oz.,  8 oz., or 10 oz cup of my favorite coffee.

This machine runs relatively quiet.

LOVE that it is touchscreen.

You can brew hot water to use with tea.

So what is my final answer?  In my opinion, the new Keurig 2.0 is worth it.

To celebrate just how happy I am with this I am going to giveaway a Keurig 2.0 to one of my readers!

Congratulations Matthew!  Be sure to look for my email and respond within 48 hours or a new winner will be picked.

“I’m really passionate about the song SKY SPILLS OVER.  It was fun creating it in the studio and I’ve been overwhelmed at the response it gets when we perform it live every night.  My son Ryan is a really talented filmmaker so I always enjoy working with him on a project.  But what made this project even more special was that 3 of my own grandkids were in the video.  This video was a lot of fun to make.  I hope people enjoy it!”

We are headed that way soon and I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Wilderness at the Smokies Resort

Wilderness at the Smokies Waterpark Resort and Family Adventure Center is a luxurious vacation and meeting destination. Wilderness at the Smokies is the largest indoor/outdoor waterpark resort in the southeast.  The great part about his resort is that admission to all three waterparks (Salamander Springs, Lake Wilderness, and Wild WaterDome) is included in your room rate.   In addition, you have access to these waterparks beginning on the day of your arrival until closing on the day you leave; therefore, it allows you plenty of time to take in the waterparks.  Adventure Forest, is a family adventure center, that features a 3 story ropes course, multi-level laser tag, black light mini-golf, mega arcade and more!

Titanic Attraction

Experience what the Titanic was like at Pigeon Forge’s Titanic exhibit.  As you enter you are given the boarding ticket of an actual passenger of the Titanic.   Follow the passenger’s story as you tour the attraction and discover the fate of said passenger at the end of the tour.  Shaped like the Titanic herself, the museum built to half the scale of the actual ship.  Walk on the replica of the Grand Staircase, touch a surface of a simulated iceberg, steer the ship, send SOS signals, view artifacts, and more at this fun filled attraction.

Lumberjack Feud

A family dinner show in Pigeon Forge, Lumberjack Feud is an unforgettable experience.  Journey back in time to the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where two logging families compete for the remaining timber before the park opens! You’ll choose a side, Dawsons or McGraws, then cheer on your lumberjack family to victory!  Lumberjack Feud brings real lumberjack athletes and the history of the Great Smoky Mountains together in one action packed night full of family fun!

What’s not to love about this theme park built around Dolly Parton and nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains!  There are plenty of rides available for all ages and all levels of adventure from the Busy Bee cars to the Wild Eagle.  You will also find a wide variety of shows and demonstrations throughout the park.

Splash Country

Next door to Dollywood theme park, your family can experience more than 20 water rides and attractions at Dollywood’s Splash Country water adventure park, including RiverRush, Tennessee’s first and only water coaster.

Report Card Incentives 2015

Are you trying to decide if you should reward your child for good grades?  I know many of us probably grew up being rewarded for our good grades in school.  Some of may have received monetary gifts for every A or B while others may have gotten that item you have had your eye on for quite some time.  Perhaps you were one of those that never got accolades for bringing home a stellar report card.  Maybe your parents believed in what Ralph Waldo Emerson did, “The reward for a thing well done is to have done it!”  Either way, being recognized for working hard generally makes a person feel better and with the end of the school year rapidly approaching, you may have some decisions to make.

Having older kids, I have learned a few things about rewarding them for grades that I would like to pass along to you.    The best celebrations we had for grades were the ones that did not involve cash incentives for earning good grades, but rather the time that was spent honoring the person was more meaningful and rewarding.  I am not saying that paying a child for making good grades is not wise, there are many arguments to support that it is.  I actually agree with many of them; however, money was not always what we could afford to give up in my household.  I had to find alternative ways to celebrate the success of my children’s academic performance.

Thankfully there are many businesses that want to help you recognize the hard efforts of your children.  Be sure to check out the contents of your child’s final school folder or report card envelope.  As a teacher, I know that we send home coupons for summer fun to kids for grades and more.  Don’t miss those coupons for bowling, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Braves tickets, and more.

Below is a list of incentives offered by various restaurants for those that have A’s and/or B’s.   Please plan ahead and contact your local store to make sure they participate in these offers as many may be selective to a specific area or participating locations! Remember that many stores are individually owned & operated so the best thing to do would be to ask your local store!

Baskin Robbins:  Free scoop of ice cream for A’s and B’s.

Bruster’s Ice Cream: One free ice cream cone for good grades.

Burger King:  A free hamburger for good grades.

Chick-fil-A:  Bring in your all A’s and B’s report card and receive a FREE 8 pack nuggets!

Chuck E. Cheese: Choose from the Super Student Award or Graduation Certificate and receive 10 FREE tokens for being a good student.

Cold Stone Creamery:  Kids in K-5 can earn free ice cream for a straight-A report card.

IHOP:  Offers free kid’s meal with a good report card grades.

Krispy Kreme:  Enjoy a free original glazed donut for each A (limit of 6).

McDonald’s: K-5 students can earn a free Happy Meal when they bring in their  report cards. Grades 6-12 get a free Value Meal.

Melting Pot: Bring in your report card with all A’s and you will be rewarded with the free Straight A’s Club Fondue Dinner at The Melting Pot Restaurant.  The K to 8th grade feature dinner will be the Three-Course.

Pizza Hut:  Any child that has 3 A’s will receive one Personal Pan Pizza and a small soft drink or carton of milk by presenting his or her report card to the manager.

While the report card incentives offered by many companies may be appropriate for some children, there are children that need to be recognized for the accomplishments they did make even if it did not result in an A or B on a report card. Praising the effort and hard work of child who pulls a C up to a B or an F up to a C is important and should be recognized. Simple acts of praise encourage your child to keep doing his or her personal best in school.

Hopefully you will find a way to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of your child inside and outside of school!

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”
