Northern Georgia

Full-Moon Suspension Bridge Hike
Tuesday, February 3, 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
Tallulah Gorge State Park – Tallulah Falls, GA
Enjoy a 1 mile hike that takes you down the stairs across, the suspension bridge and on the rim of the gorge under the full moon. Register in advance. $5 plus $5 parking. 706-754-7981.

Atlanta Audubon Society Bird Walk
Friday, February 13, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Fort Yargo State Park – Winder, GA
Fort Yargo has great habitat, including marshland, mixed hardwood forest, and an expansive open lake. We will look for a variety of birds like woodpeckers, warblers, and wading birds. Learn about the Atlanta Audubon Society and how you can get involved in bird watching, as well as land conservation. $5 parking. 770-867-3489.

40th Annual Fireside Arts and Craft Show
Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. from February 21 until February 22
Unicoi State Park and Lodge – Helen, GA
Browse more than 50 of the Southeast’s finest artists and crafts people inside the lodge for this Unicoi tradition. This indoor, juried show has a reputation for excellence and is a nice balance between fine arts and quality crafts. $5 parking. 706-878-4738.

Coastal Georgia

Colonial Faire and Muster
Saturday & Sunday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. from February 7 until February 8
Wormsloe Historic Site – Savannah, GA
Experience life in Colonial Georgia during the 18th century with a military encampment, sutler’s row, craft demonstrations, military demonstrations, and period music and dance. Food concessions will be available. Free. 912-353-3023.

Colonial Cook-Off
Saturday, February 21, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Fort King George Historic Site – Darien, GA
In teams of one or two, research a historical recipe and try your hand at cooking it. Participants can be dressed in historical reproduction clothing. Recipes must be submitted. Camper Chili Cookoff
Saturday, February 21, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Skidaway Island State Park – Savannah, GA
Do you think your chili is great? The best? Prove it with our first cookoff for registered campers. For non-entrants there is no fee to come and taste the chili. Please register at skidawayphoto@yahoo.com. Contest Entry Fee $10, $5 parking. 912-598-2300.

Archery Classes

Panola Mountain State Park – Stockbridge, GA

Under the Night Sky – Valentine’s Day
Saturday, February 14, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Chattahoochee Bend State Park – Newnan, GA
Come with us on a moderate 2-mile hike along the Chattahoochee River to our observation tower. We will have telescopes to observe the night sky, gazing for stars, planets, and constellations. Sturdy closed-toed shoes and flashlight/headlamp required. Reservations required. Meet at Day Use Area. Weather permitting. $5 per couple. $5 parking. 770-254-7271.

Atlanta Audubon Beginners Winter Bird Walk
Saturday, February 14, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Hard Labor Creek State Park – Rutledge, GA
This field trip is designed for anyone interested in learning more about birds, habitats critical to some species, and organizations like the Audubon Society which are dedicated to bird conservation. Meet at the Park Office/Trading Post. Donations of bird seed for the park bird feeder are welcome. $5 parking. 706-557-3001.

Valentine’s Day Wagon Rides
Saturday, February 14
Hard Labor Creek State Park – Rutledge, GA
Bring your special someone to cozy up to underneath the night sky on Valentine’s Day. This wagon ride will begin at the beach and take riders through some romantic landscapes with a lovely view of the night sky. Space is limited, please register in advance. $5 plus $5 parking. 706-557-3001.

Tree Top Excursions: Introduction Climb
Saturday, February 21, 1 p.m.
Panola Mountain State Park – Stockbridge, GA
Join us “on rope” for an adventure exploring the canopy above. Participants will use rope and harness for this moderately strenuous activity. Participants must call to register in advance. $15 plus $5 parking. 770-389-7801.

Middle & South Georgia
Antique Steam Engine Demonstration
Saturday, February 7, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Jarrell Plantation Historic Site – Juliette, GA
Watch one of the few remaining working Talbott stationary steam engines in operation. See if you can make the whistle blow. Explore the saw mill, grist mill, and cotton gin house that this engine once powered, and other farm buildings and houses–all original. $4-6.50 478-986-5172.

Great Backyard Bird Count
Friday, February 13, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
F.D. Roosevelt State Park – Pine Mountain, GA
Help us and Friends of the Harris County Library count winter birds during this international birding event sponsored by Audubon and Cornell University. Novice and expert birders welcome. Dress for the weather. Bring binoculars or share park loaners. We provide a check list. Bring a picnic lunch. Meet at the park office. $5 parking. 706-663-4858.

Kiss My Grits!
Saturday, February 14, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
George L. Smith State Park – Twin City, GA
Come join us as we grind grits at our water powered gristmill just as it was done in the late 1800s. Grits will be available for $4 per 2 lb. bag. $5 parking. 478-763-2759.

Geology Day
Saturday, February 14, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Providence Canyon State Outdoor Recreation Area – Lumpkin, GA
Interpretive Ranger Trena Evans will lead visitors into the canyons and back in time to discover the geological history of the canyons. The floors of the canyons are often wet and muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. Bring water and your camera. $5 plus $5 parking. 229-838-4706.

Winter Wilderness Trail Ride
Monday, February 16, 10:45 a.m.
F.D. Roosevelt State Park – Pine Mountain, GA
Saddle up with the naturalist and a wrangler to celebrate Presidents’ Day in the winter woodlands. Learn about the natural history and get the “horse’s view” of Pine Mountain Ridge. Bring a picnic lunch and drinks for a picnic after the ride. Must pre-register and pre-pay. Meet at Roosevelt Stables. $30 plus $5 parking. 706-628-7463.

Arbor Day “Bark In The Park” Dog Walk
Saturday, February 21, 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
F.D. Roosevelt State Park – Pine Mountain, GA
Celebrate Arbor Day among the trees with your canine friend. New sounds, sights, and discoveries for all. Dogs must be on a 6-foot leash. You do not have to have a pet to walk with us. Supported by the Columbus area Petsmart. Meet next to the Trading Post in the campground. $5 parking. 706-663-4858.

2nd Annual Mardi Gras Celebration & Parade
Saturday, February 21, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Georgia Veterans State Park – Cordele, GA
Can’t make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras? Then come to Georgia Veterans State Park. There will be music, great food, a Cajun Cook-Off, Parade and many vendors. This will be the Cajun Capital of South Georgia! If you would like to be a vendor or compete in the Cajun Cook Off, call the park office. $5 parking. 229-276-2371.

Buzzard Day Cruise-In
Saturday, February 28, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Reed Bingham State Park – Adel, GA
The Buzzard Day Cruise-In is all about three things; cars, boats, and buzzards. Show cars from the local area will be on display for you to enjoy, and when you need a break from some cars, enjoy and boat ride up the Little River to see some buzzards, which gather here in the hundreds. $8/adult, $5/child $5 parking. 229-896-3551.
