Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker

Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker

As a mother of boys, I have not had the opportunity to enjoy The Nutcracker as most families may have.  My boys are all boy so attending a ballet has never been on their to do list.  Of course, they would have gone if I bought tickets and I am sure they would have enjoyed it!  However, this year, I went to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre to see this magical ballet with my beautiful parents.

The story of The Nutcracker has been around since 1892 and has been performed by the Atlanta Ballet for more than half a century.   This year they had the live orchestra of the Nutcracker, composed by Tchaikovsky,  performed by conductor Gary Sheldon.  To add to this magical ballet, illusionist Drew Thomas who plays the role of Drosselmeyer, the toymaker, brought to life many features of this classic through his magic.   Drosselmeyer is responsible for bringing the toys to life and for taking young Marya on a magical journey.   From the beginning, we were memorized as Drosselmeyer made a white handkerchief float through the air and what seemed like on command, drifted back to him as he set off on his adventure with Marya.

The Christmas gift of the Nutcracker doll to young Marya during her family’s grand party is the basis of the story. Marya who loves it dearly and will do anything to protect it from the Rat King and his army of rodents is rewarded with a trip to an enchanting place called the Sugar Candy Kingdom.  Act II, which takes place in the Sugar Candy Kingdom, was truly spectacular.  From the Arabian dancers to Mother Matrushka, the Russian nesting doll, the choreography is absolutely spellbinding!   One of my favorites was the Russian dancers who performed tricks, jumps and other Russian dances. I was absolutely blown away by their performance.

The Atlanta ballet’s Nutcracker was truly a dream come true for this lady.  Between all the leaps and pirouettes and beautiful costumes, the dancers captivated me with this enchanting and timeless story.  The Nutcracker will leave everyone mesmerized.  Even though I have boys, next year I will make it a point to take them to this classic ballet and I can’t wait for them to see what magic will unfold.
